We Come From Humble Beginnings

In response to a growing need for trained medical personnel at fireline basecamps, founder and CEO Kevin Ratzmann deployed ERL’s first team in Summer 2021. Small but mighty, this first team quickly developed a reputation for excellence throughout the fire community. As a result, the company rapidly grew from 1 medical trailer with 4 employees to 5 fully equipped mobile medical units and 100 employees who filled fireline, REMS, and base camp support needs, including high-demand COVID-19 mitigation teams.

Kevin Ratzmann

Our Founder and CEO Kevin Ratzmann is a dedicated life long public servant. Kevin joined the Army when he was 17 and then continued to serve through Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue. Kevin has served on many disaster response teams as well as state and federal Incident Management Teams in many roles including Medical Unit Leader (MEDL). Kevin recently retired as Fire Chief after serving as a Firefighter/Paramedic for over 25 years.

Dr. Will Smith M.D., Paramedic, FAEMS

Dr. Smith is an EMS and Emergency Medicine physician practicing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and is a Clinical Assistant Professor for the University of Washington School of Medicine. Locally, he serves as the Co-Medical Director and EMS Physician for Grand Teton National Park, Teton County Search & Rescue, Bridger Teton National Forest, and Jackson Hole Fire/EMS. Dr. Smith also serves as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps. COL Smith has practiced medicine around the world on 6 continents, from the 'Baghdad ER' to Easter Island. His combat experience combined with his pre-hospital EMS experience as a Paramedic, and his technical Search and Rescue skills have led to numerous speaking engagements at Wilderness and EMS conferences/seminars around the world. Dr. Smith has also been appointed to several national committees (American Heart Association), authored numerous book chapters and consensus guidelines on Wilderness and Rescue Medicine, and serves as a Subject Matter Expert for multiple DARPA projects.
